How to find the School

The School of Geography and the Environment is housed in the Oxford University Centre for the Environment (OUCE) within the old Dyson Perrins Laboratory building in the University Science Area. Access to the School is via Hinshelwood Road, which is off of South Parks Road.

Travelling to Oxford

Oxford is about 60 miles (90 kms) northwest of London and has excellent road, coach and national rail links. Regular coach services connect Oxford with London, Cambridge and Birmingham and with London airports.

Travelling by car

Take the M40 or A40 from London; the M40 or A34 from Birmingham; the A420 from Swindon and Bath; or the A40 from Cheltenham; to Oxford. Parking in Oxford is extremely difficult and to be avoided if at all possible.

There are no car parking facilities at the School or within the Science Area.

Visitors are encouraged to use the Park&Ride bus services which operate between the city centre and parking areas on the outskirts at Pear Tree, Woodstock Road, A44 (northwest); Water Eaton, Banbury Road, A4260 (northeast); Seacourt, Botley Road, B4044 (west); Redbridge, Abingdon Road (south); and Thornhill, London Road, A40(east).

Travelling by rail

There is a frequent direct service from London Paddington via Reading, and from Birmingham New Street via Banbury and Coventry; other connections from the south via Reading or Didcot, from the north via Birmingham New Street. Travelling by coach

There are direct coach services from Heathrow and Gatwick, and from various locations in central London, to Oxford: the Oxford Espress; the Oxford Tube; and the Megabus. There are also National Express services from most major cities. Most coaches serve the Oxford coach station, Gloucester Green, in Oxford's city centre.

From London airports

London Heathrow and Gatwick airports are linked to Oxford by The Airline coach service, which operates a direct frequent service twenty-four hours a day (tel: +44 (0)1865 785400). London Stansted airport is linked to Oxford by the National Express 757 coach service, running every two hours (tel: +44 (0)8705 747777). A number of companies, including Oxicars and CCB Cars, offer pre-bookable airport transfers.

Travelling to the School

The School is within easy walking distance of both the city centre (0.6 miles, 10 minutes) and the Oxford Railway Station (1.1 miles, 20 minutes).

Walking

On leaving the Oxford Railway Station (view map), head to Hythe Bridge Street and turn left towards the city centre. You will pass the Saïd Business School on your left. Head up Hythe Bridge Street, over the river to the pedestrian crossing (with traffic lights) on the corner. The road turns left, but you will need to cross the road onto George Street and continue straight ahead towards the city centre. On your left you will pass the bus / coach station at Gloucester Green. Continue up George Street to the crossroads with Cornmarket / Magdalen streets. Continue straight across onto Broad Street.

From the city centre (view map), head towards Broad Street. Continue down Broad Street to reach a crossroads (with the Kings Arms public house ahead on left) and turn left into Parks Road. At the next traffic lights, turn right onto South Parks Road. The Dyson Perrins building is on the left-hand side of South Parks Road. The main entrance to the School can be found off of Hinshelwood Road on your left.
